Mistfall Hunter Returner Woodling

The Returner Woodling is a rare, bell-carrying creature and the signature PvE objective of Mistfall Hunter’s extraction loop. Bellring Games’ official description puts it simply: to escape with your spoils, you need to locate this rare monster, defeat it to obtain a Soul of Return, and use it to find your way home. It is not a normal enemy so much as the run’s extraction gate — without its drop, you cannot complete the official extraction loop with your loot.

Why the Woodling Matters

Every run follows the same spine:

  1. Enter the corrupted ruins as a Gyldhunter.
  2. Loot and fight toward the Woodling while managing rival players.
  3. Defeat the Returner Woodling and claim the Soul of Return.
  4. Ring the bell at an extraction point and leave with your haul.

Anything you do not extract is lost when the mist claims you. The Soul of Return is a Legendary tactical item described as the lingering soul of an unnamed person who passed away in a foreign land, and ringing the Bell of Return consumes one charge to escape the dungeon and travel back to the camp.

Finding the Returner Woodling

The Woodling does not sit at a fixed spawn. Community documentation and the in-game guide describe several ways to track it:

  • Audio cues — Returner Woodlings periodically emit bell sounds that act as a directional beacon. Open Beta players widely reported the bells growing louder as they approached the encounter, and guides recommend headphones to read the stereo panning. Keep effect volume high enough that bells cut through combat.
  • Visual cues — the Woodling also gives off special effects visible through walls, helping you pin it down even when you cannot see the creature itself.
  • Map marks — beta reports describe a boss-tier map marker appearing once the Woodling encounter is eligible or nearby, which may update dynamically if it relocates. Community guides note this behavior is beta-reported and the UI can change.
  • The Returning Chime — on Hallowgrove, interacting with the Returning Chime (which activates after a certain period) summons a Woodling at a random location, and following the bell’s guidance leads you to its spawn.

Fighting the Returner Woodling

When you reach it, the fight is a short, focused burst encounter rather than a drawn-out boss battle:

  • Defeat it quickly — the Woodling will flee after some time, so guides stress killing it before it escapes.
  • Loot the bell — once defeated, it transforms into a Soul Tree with a bell attached, and interacting with it grants the Soul of Return.
  • Expect adds — beta streams showed arena pressure and environmental hazards around the encounter, so clear smaller Corroded before committing to the boss unless your build has strong cleave and sustain.
  • Swap stances — since every class has two weapon stances, switch between melee pressure and ranged/burst options if the Woodling creates distance or fog zones.

Extracting with the Soul of Return

With the Soul secured, the bell is the exit plan:

  • Near the Soul Tree, use Summon Portal to consume a Soul of Return and summon an Extraction Point.
  • The bell rings as extraction begins — community coverage notes it rings five times — and the sound can be heard by other players on the map. Pressing the extraction interaction (reported as H on PC by one guide) starts the process.
  • The ring is a beacon for rival Gyldhunters. Guides recommend extracting immediately after the soul is secured, especially in a PvP-heavy lobby.
  • Alternative exits — Open Beta 3 also added fixed-route exits as an alternative, and a Smuggler Woodling offers a quicker escape with limited loot in some regions.

Squad and Solo Tips

  • Solo — gear for self-peel, hit-and-run add clears, and an early extract; a camper near your extraction point can cost your entire backpack.
  • Squad — split bell-listening duty, keep one player watching entrances while another fights, and agree on loot rules before the pull.
  • Third-party risk — the Woodling fight is one of the loudest invitations in the game. Community guides offer three options: speed-kill with coordinated burst, hold the zone with a guard, or bail the moment the soul is picked up.
  • Soul of Return — the Legendary item the Woodling drops.
  • Mistfall Hunter PvE — where the Woodling hunt fits into the loop.

  • Hallowgrove — the map where the Returning Chime and Soul Tree flow is documented.
