Mistfall Hunter Co-op & Multiplayer
Mistfall Hunter is built around squad play, but multiplayer is fully optional. The game supports both solo runs and cooperative squads of up to three Gyldhunters, and developer materials describe co-op as optional rather than mandatory. Squad play is how most players approach the harder content, though, because monsters scale for trios on the tougher maps and quests.
Party size and queues
Mistfall Hunter supports up to three players per party:
- Solo — drop in alone against the full PvPvE match.
- Duo — a two-player party. There is no dedicated duo queue at launch; per the crossplay guides, leaving the Fill Party option disabled keeps a party at two instead of auto-matching a third, which means duos run in the trio mode and can still meet full three-player squads in the wild.
- Trio — the full squad size. Interacting with the boat, choosing Explore, then selecting Trio mode and a map starts matchmaking with a full team.
Steam and Skystone marketing describe the squad size as three players, and the Xbox store lists online co-op for 2–3 players.
How to play with friends
The in-game friend system uses a Player ID that is separate from your Steam or Xbox friends list. Steps to squad up, per GameRant’s guide and player reports:
- Progress through the opening content first. The Friends menu unlocks only after you finish the tutorial, extract, return to the Hub, and complete an early solo run through Hallowgrove.
- Open the Friends menu from the panel in the top-left corner of the screen.
- Search for a friend by their Player ID or nickname and send a friend request. Once accepted, you can invite them to your party.
- From the party screen, everyone readies up and matchmaking starts; you deploy together into the mist.
Crossplay
Multiplayer is fully cross-platform at launch. Full crossplay connects PC (Steam and the Xbox app), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and all platforms share one server pool. Cross-progression is a separate question: Xbox console and Xbox on PC share progress through Xbox Play Anywhere, but Steam and PlayStation saves do not carry between platforms. See the crossplay guide for the full breakdown.
Trio mode changes class skills
Playing in a trio squad is not just about numbers — several class skills behave differently in trio mode, per the in-game skill descriptions:
- Cooldowns shorten. The Blackarrow’s Scattershot, Frostblight Bomb, Shadow Step, and Impact Grenade; the Shadowstrix’s Flash Stride, Inspiring Impale, and Spinning Slash; the Mercenary’s Stonebreaker Slash and Hammer Dash; and the Withered Knight’s Parry all have a shorter base cooldown in trio mode.
- Constructs get tougher. The Seer’s runes (Punishment, Healing, Shelter, Stealth, and Windwalker) and the Sorcerer’s gate are Constructs that are more durable in trio mode.
- Support charges increase. The Seer’s Healing Rune and Healing Art gain additional uses per match in trio mode.
- PvP defenses improve. The Mercenary’s Block consumes less Energy when blocking PvP damage in trio mode.
Squads and the meta
Because skills and survivability shift with squad size, community guides recommend planning roles for a trio: a frontline class like the Mercenary or Withered Knight to hold space, a support or control option like the Seer or Sorcerer, and a skirmisher such as the Shadowstrix or Blackarrow. Player discussions also note that some story bosses are effectively impossible solo because monsters scale for trios, which pushes progression-minded squads to group up.
The developers have said they will analyze class balance separately for solo and trio data after launch, so today’s strongest trio composition may not stay that way after the first balance patch.
Solo vs. squad
Community discussion frames the solo versus squad choice in practical terms:
- Squad play is recommended for new players and for farming — a trio clears faster and revives teammates, which makes the PvPvE world more approachable.
- Solo play appeals to extraction veterans who enjoy stealth, ratting, and making every decision themselves. Several guides note that solo queue is always available.
